Seawings: Flying Boat Plans
by Brian Ribbans
This small but useful page (part of a much larger resource web site) offers 20+ details of the larger flying boats, most of which fit into the golden age category.
The plans are featured as part of a larger web site dedicated to the flying boat - in detail. The site specializes in providing information for the scale modeler in the form of historic photographs, plans and articles detailing the construction of 1/72nd scale models of various types, together with close-up photographic 'walk-rounds' of some of the surviving examples and many other reference details.
The plans, in many cases actually thru-views and scale drawings, are a mixed bag. Some are detailed and complete while others are fragmented. Still, the site is definately worth checking through if you're going to design a flying boat.
The plans (golden age) available at present include:
Short-Mayo Composite
Short "C Class" Empire
Blackburn Perth
Short 'G' Class
Short S.45 Solent
Cant Z.501
Supermarine Stranraer
Grumman G.21 Goose
Shavrov Sh-2
Macchi MC-99
Savoia-Marchetti SM.55
Grigorovich M-5
Supermarine Walrus
Beriev Be-4
LeO. H470
Dornier DelphinAn example of a plans set: Savoia-Marchetti SM.55
The walk-arounds are especially interesting. An example below shows the amount of detail some of the walk-arounds offer:
